Pitchers Shine, Terps Fall

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Today's game between the University of Maryland (0-4) and Gardner-Webb University (3-4) featured a pitching duel between the two starters. In the end errors in the field cost the Terps, and Gardner-Webb's Joey Siak came out on top with a 2-0 win.

Sean Kane was impressive in his first appearance of the season for the Terps. He ended the game with no earned runs on two hits and two walk with four strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Kane pitched had pitched a perfect game after five innings of work, however the first two Bulldog batters in the sixth each reached on errors in the field by the Terrapins. Gardner-Webb was able to capitalize on the situation, moving the batters up on a sacrifice bunt. They were able to get a run in when the next batter put down a bunt for the squeeze play. During the next at bat, Gardner-Webb's Clint Abernathy took off from third to steal home for the Bulldogs' second run of the inning.

The Terps struggled at the plate throughout the day, getting just six hits in the game. Mike Costantino and Will Frazier each had doubles in the game, while Anthony Buffone had two singles. Brian Jarosinski and Kevin Hart each had singles in the game as well.

Justin Hulse made his third appearance of the season, facing his former team for the first time. He didn't allow any hits and struck out one in one inning of relief.

Maryland will be in action next when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., on Friday, Feb. 27, to take on Vanderbilt at 4:00 p.m.
