Media Relations Intern

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT -- MEDIA RELATIONS INTERN

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND

2008-09

 

The University of Maryland Athletics Media Relations Office is seeking applications for an internship position. The successful candidate will be working in a dynamic, positive office setting which allows for a maximum opportunity for growth and learning in a department that handles one of the leading athletics programs in the nation.

 

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree, as well as outstanding communications skills and strong writing ability. Previous media relations and skills with image-editing and desktop-publishing software are desired, particularly some experience with Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. Added consideration will also be given to applicants with a working knowledge of various Stat Crew Systems software packages.

 

The position requires extensive hours, including nights and weekends. Applicants interested in pursuing a career in the media relations / sports information field are best-suited.

 

The specific duties are as follows:

 

• The successful candidate will be the primary media relations contact for softball, with other responsibilities in football and men's basketball. Responsible for writing news releases, creating publicity opportunities and feature stories, keeping statistics based on current NCAA guidelines, maintaining records archives and performing limited game-management functions at home events for the media in these two sports. Coordinate and organize interviews for coaches, staff and student-athletes with local, regional and national media. Would also be responsible for writing editorial copy for media guides and for the umterps.com web site.

 

• Secondary media relations contact for football. Assist the primary football contact with game-day duties and in developing positive publicity opportunities. Assist with the coordination and organization of post-practice interviews for coaches and student-athletes with local, regional and national media.

 

• Assist with game-day operations in media facilities for football and men's basketball.

 

• Serve as the editor of the football and men's basketball game program.

 

• Other duties as assigned, including various research projects, handling customer-service questions from fans and maintaining archival records of newspaper articles written about Maryland athletics.

 

 

Compensation will be hourly with some overtime available on an 11-month contract, to run from July 1, 2008, through June 1, 2009. Benefits are not part of the compensation package.
